What Does Hail Damage Look Like on a Roof? A Kansas City Homeowner’s Guide

Kansas City is no stranger to hailstorms. But once the storm passes and the hail melts, you may be left wondering: Did that actually damage my roof?

The tricky thing about hail damage is that it isn’t always obvious. Your roof can look perfectly normal from your driveway while still having damage that could shorten the life of your shingles or eventually lead to bigger problems.

So, what does hail damage actually look like? And how do you know when it’s time to have your roof inspected?

Here’s what Kansas City homeowners should know.

What Does Hail Damage Look Like on Asphalt Shingles?

Hail damage doesn’t always look like a cracked or missing shingle. In fact, some of the most important signs can be difficult to spot if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Depending on the size of the hail, wind speed, age and condition of your roof, and the direction of the storm, signs of hail damage may include:

  • Dark or bruised-looking spots on shingles
  • Areas where protective granules have been knocked away
  • Exposed asphalt underneath the granules
  • Cracks or fractures in shingles
  • Dents or impact marks
  • Damaged or loosened shingles
  • Damage to vents, flashing and other roof components

Sometimes the damage is obvious. Other times, you may need to get onto the roof and look closely to find it.

And that’s exactly why we don’t recommend trying to determine the condition of your roof from the ground.

Can You See Hail Damage From the Ground?

Sometimes—but not always.

Large hail can leave obvious signs around your property. You might notice damaged siding, dented gutters, torn window screens or damage to outdoor furniture and vehicles.

Those can all be clues that your roof may have taken a hit, too.

But roofing damage itself can be much harder to see.

Think about how much of your roof you can actually see while standing in your driveway. Even with a clear view of one section, you probably can’t see every slope, vent, ridge or flashing detail.

A roof can also sustain damage on one side while another side looks relatively untouched because hail and wind don’t necessarily hit every surface of your home equally.

If your home was in the path of a significant hailstorm, “I don’t see anything” isn’t necessarily the same as “there isn’t any damage.”

Granule Loss vs. Hail Damage: What’s the Difference?

Asphalt shingles are covered in small granules that help protect the material underneath from UV exposure and weather.

Some granule loss is normal as a roof ages. You may even notice loose granules collecting in your gutters over time.

Hail, however, can knock granules away at the point of impact and potentially damage the shingle underneath.

This is where having an experienced roofer look at the roof matters. Not every missing granule means you have a hail claim, and normal wear and tear is different from storm-related damage.

The goal of an inspection isn’t to call every imperfection hail damage. It’s to determine whether there is legitimate evidence of damage and help you understand what you’re looking at.

Does an Inspector Only Look at the Roof?

No—and this is something homeowners often don’t realize.

When we’re evaluating a property after a hailstorm, the shingles are only part of the picture.

There may also be evidence of storm damage on:

  • Gutters and downspouts
  • Roof vents
  • Flashing
  • Siding
  • Fascia and soffits
  • Window screens
  • Exterior metal components
  • Other areas exposed to the storm

These areas can provide additional clues about the severity and direction of the storm.

A good storm inspection looks at your home as a whole, not just a few shingles.

How Much Hail Damage Is Enough for Insurance to Replace a Roof?

This is one of the most common questions we hear—and unfortunately, there isn’t one universal number.

Insurance companies evaluate storm claims according to the homeowner’s individual policy and the damage documented during the inspection. Your deductible, roof age, roofing material, policy endorsements and whether your policy provides replacement cost or actual cash value coverage can all affect how a claim is handled.

An adjuster will inspect the property and document evidence of damage. The insurance company then determines what is covered under your particular policy.

That’s also why you shouldn’t assume that because your neighbor received a new roof, yours will automatically qualify—or that because your neighbor’s claim was denied, yours will be too.

Every roof and every insurance policy can be different.

Do You Need a Leak to Have Hail Damage?

No.

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions we hear after storms.

A roof does not have to be actively leaking for hail to have damaged it.

Storm damage can compromise shingles or other roofing components without immediately allowing water into your home. A leak may not appear until later, after additional rain, wind, temperature changes or normal weather exposure.

Waiting for water to show up on your ceiling isn’t a great strategy for determining whether your roof made it through a hailstorm.

Don’t Wait Too Long to Check Your Roof

Even if everything looks fine from the ground, it is worth having your roof checked after a significant storm.

Insurance policies can contain requirements and time limits related to reporting storm damage and filing claims. Those requirements vary by company and policy, so don’t rely on a neighbor’s experience—or something you read online—to determine your own deadline.

Review your policy or talk with your insurance agent if you’re unsure.

More importantly, identifying damage sooner gives you a better understanding of the condition of your roof before a small problem has an opportunity to become a bigger one.
